RAF Motorsports Members Tackle virtual Daytona 24Hr

A group of RAF Motorsports members are today competing in a virtual 24Hr endurance race in the first official iRacing.com special event of the 2022 season. The five drivers will be piloting a BMW M4 GT3 specification car sporting a striking livery created by former RAF Motorcycle Racer and team captain Chris Boland.

With a large variety in experience between the drivers the team are aiming to get a solid run through the event. The multi-class format will see LMP2 cars running alongside GT3 and with a 10 sec per lap variation in pace teamwork will be a large contributor to the chance of success in the event.

The team are livestreaming their event to the RAF e Motorsports Facebook channel where their POV is available along with exclusive access to the team voice channel.

Association Deputy Chairman Darren Berris, a front running driver in 750 Motor Club Sports Specials said “we’ve seen over the last few years how well we can integrate synthetics into IRL motorsport activity and this will be a great event to showcase that whilst raising some awareness of RAF Central Fund on our livery.”

James King, an RAF Cyberspace Communications Specialist is a seasoned iRacing driver added “we’ve been looking forward to this event and building up to it for a while. I’ve more experience in the LMP class than GT3 but with our preparation we should be in a good place. It will be interesting as last year I used by sim experience to help when competing in my first race IRL where we finished on the podium in the 12Hr Race Of Remembrance at Anglesey. This time I’ll be transferring that experience back into a virtual endurance race”.

Competition Secretary for the newest discipline of the RAFMSA Dan Hardwick, RAF eMotorsports has been assisting his team mates with data analysis “we’re able to use the datalogging in sim exactly the same is how it’s used IRL and we’ve been able to map that over to each driver. Over the last few weeks we’ve been developing not just the drivers but also the setup on the car and hopefully we’ve found a balance between outright performance, drivability and endurance in attempt to minimise the number of pit stops required”.
