Rallying is a test of crew and car pitched against both the clock and the elements on the treacherous forest roads or super-fast asphalt stages. There are no gravel traps, safety cars, or run off areas here. Just a crew of 2 (driver and co-driver) in a 4-wheeled vehicle trying to get from one point to another in the shortest possible time.
Vehicle Types and Discipline Variety
You can use almost any car with the right safety modifications to compete but to be competitive, you really need a car that’s either four wheel drive or turbo charged – preferably both.
The RAF Rally discipline includes both special stage rallying when competitors go flat out against the clock over a set rally stage and road rallying where the emphasis is on navigation and efficient movement between set points. Virtually every weekend an RAF competitor is in an active competition somewhere in the UK or abroad.
The UK Motorsport licensed Championship has its roots in the origins of the RAF Motorsports Association with Duncan McRae, the founder of the RAF Motor Sports Association as one of its earliest competitors.
The RAF Rally Championship is held over 5 events. The first four are at the competitors discretion but each event must be completed in specified time windows to be counted. The final round sees all the RAF Competitors go head to head at one venue. For 2019 this will once again be the Hall Trophy Stages in Blyton. One of the most major advantages of the RAF Rally Championship is the scoring system which awards points based on your final position in your car class rather than your overall result. This means you can be competitive in virtually any rally car and the accolades go to the best driver rather than the best car.
